Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, met with former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja for a closed-door discussion focused on national issues and the state of the country. Obi described the meeting as “fruitful” and referred to Jonathan as his “elder brother, statesman, and leader”.
Although details of their discussion remain sketchy, the meeting has sparked speculation about possible cooperation or alignment between PDP heavyweights and Labour Party loyalists ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The meeting comes amid growing consultations among key political figures, with both Obi and Jonathan being considered potential presidential candidates.
PDP has zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the South, fueling speculation about Jonathan’s possible return to the presidential race or Obi’s potential candidacy.
Obi has already declared his intention to contest the 2027 elections under the Labour Party and its coalition with the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Their discussion likely centered on Nigeria’s current challenges, including insecurity, unemployment, and economic hardship, as well as potential strategies for addressing these issues.
The meeting may signal early coalition-building efforts within the opposition, particularly given President Bola Tinubu’s consolidation of power.
