The Rivers State House of Assembly has resumed plenary following the expiration of the six-month state of emergency imposed on the state by President Bola Tinubu.
Tinubu lifted the emergency rule on Wednesday, September 17, and directed Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and members of the assembly to return to their duties starting Thursday, September 18.

Thursday’s plenary is being presided over by Speaker Martins Amaewhule at the conference hall in the legislative quarters, Port Harcourt. The facility has served as the lawmakers’ temporary chamber since the official assembly complex on Moscow Road was razed by fire and subsequently demolished by the state government.
The reconstruction of the complex could not be completed by the outgone sole administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd), who was appointed to oversee the state during the emergency period.
President Tinubu had declared emergency rule in Rivers on March 18, citing the political crisis triggered by the rift between Governor Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
