Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President of Nigeria, has denied reports that he promised to step down for a younger candidate in the 2027 presidential election, describing the reports as misrepresentation of his statement to the BBC Hausa Service.
According to his spokesman, Paul Ibe, Atiku emphasized that young people and other prospective presidential aspirants are free to enter the contest, and he would support a young candidate who emerges through a competitive primary without hesitation.
Atiku is expected to run for the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress, which has been adopted by major opposition politicians as the platform to dislodge the All Progressives Congress from power.
