Pilots of the nine teams competing in the UIM E1 World Championship are bracing for a thrilling showdown in Lagos this weekend, as the all-electric powerboat series makes its African debut.

The E1, which launched in Jeddah last year, is the world’s first all-electric international offshore powerboat racing competition. Nine teams are contesting the series across selected global cities, with Lagos hosting the penultimate round before the season finale in Miami.
Ahead of Sunday’s main race, RaceBird pilots tested the waters on Thursday, with qualifying scheduled for Saturday.

Seven-time Super Bowl winner Tom Brady’s Team Brady leads the standings by just one point with 135 points, ahead of tennis legend Rafael Nadal’s Team Rafa on 134 points. Brady’s co-pilot, Sam Coleman, said the title race is wide open.

“It’s been a tough season, and the competition has been intense. We hold just a one-point lead, which shows how close it is. We’ll see how it goes in Lagos—I can’t wait for the race,” Coleman told our correspondent.
Ivory Coast football icon Didier Drogba, co-owner of Team Drogba Global Africa alongside Gabrielle Lemaire, is also expected in Lagos to support his team. Team Drogba pilot Oban Duncan believes the Nigerian crowd could provide extra motivation.
“We’ve been on the water and the conditions feel perfect. Drogba is huge here and his presence gives the team comfort. We want to make that count,” Duncan said.
Team Rafa’s co-pilot Tom Chiappe also expressed optimism:
“We hope to get the support of the fans in Lagos. The entire team has worked hard all season, and winning here would be special.”
E1 CEO Rodi Basso described the Lagos GP as a landmark moment for the championship.
“Lagos brings incredible energy, creativity and ambition that matches E1’s DNA. We’re honoured to work with local partners to deliver a spectacle that promotes clean innovation while showcasing Lagos as a global hub for sport and sustainable development.”
With only one point separating the top two teams and Lagos set to provide a vibrant stage, the battle for the E1 title promises to be fierce as the season nears its climax.
