Robert Mugabe Jr, the 33-year-old son of Zimbabwe’s late former President Robert Mugabe, has been released on bail after appearing in a Harare court on charges of drug possession.
Mugabe Jr was arrested on Wednesday morning for driving the wrong way down a one-way street, during which police allegedly found two small sachets of cannabis in a sling bag he was wearing.
He was accompanied by supporters and wasn’t handcuffed as he appeared in court. The court ordered him to pay a bail of $300.
Mugabe Jr’s lawyer disputed the charges, claiming the drugs were found in a car with three other occupants and questioned the accuracy of the police’s reported quantity of cannabis.
The police had stated that 2 grams of cannabis were recovered, while the defense argues that only 0.02 grams were found.
The arrest is part of a larger investigation, with police also detaining five individuals linked to Mugabe Jr and seizing 25 sachets of marijuana and six ecstasy pills.
This isn’t Mugabe Jr’s first brush with the law; in 2023, he was arrested for allegedly damaging property and spitting on a police officer at a party, which was eventually settled out of court.
