Suspected Fulani herdsmen have attacked the Onoli community in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State, killing a farmer and leaving several residents macheted.
The attack, which occurred on Friday, has posed a serious threat to lives, livelihoods, and the very survival of the community.
According to eyewitness reports, the attackers stormed local farmlands, leaving a trail of destruction and forcing many residents to flee for safety.
A family member of the deceased, Sampson Okolie, confirmed the killing, saying the victim, Ogbaki, was stabbed in the chest and died at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) Enugu around 2 am on Saturday.
The area has been experiencing insecurity for months, with Fulani herdsmen forcing many villagers to abandon their farmlands. Residents of nearby Obuovia village have been completely displaced.
Another young man, Azuefe, was recently arrested and detained for three months after herders accused him of “disturbing them” while farming in the same area.
During his detention, he was allegedly tortured and accused of being a member of the Eastern Security Network (ESN).
Community leaders are calling on the Enugu State Government and security agencies to intervene and safeguard lives and property.
