Malawi’s newly elected President Peter Mutharika has appointed Joseph Mwanamvekha as the country’s Finance Minister, a role Mwanamvekha previously held from 2016 to 2020.
This strategic move comes as Malawi grapples with pressing economic challenges, including foreign exchange shortages, rising living costs, and debt distress.
As an economist and former banker, Mwanamvekha’s expertise is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the country’s economic direction and restoring investor confidence.
Mutharika, who was sworn in on Saturday after winning the presidential election, has also appointed Enoch Chihana as Second Vice President and George Chaponda as Foreign Affairs Minister.
With Malawi’s economy facing significant hurdles, Mwanamvekha’s appointment signals a commitment to fiscal discipline and economic growth.
