Burkina Faso defender Steeve Yago has expressed frustration over Nigeria’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs in Africa, questioning the fairness of the process that saw the Super Eagles edge out his country on goal difference.
The Stallions believed their 3–1 victory over Ethiopia on the final matchday had secured them a playoff spot, only to discover that Nigeria had snatched it with a superior goal record after thrashing Benin Republic 4–0 in Uyo on Tuesday.
The Super Eagles’ emphatic win — their biggest in the qualifiers — proved decisive as South Africa topped Group C with a 3–0 win over Rwanda, while Nigeria finished among the best second-placed teams to book their place in the playoffs.

Reacting to the outcome, Yago took to Instagram to vent his displeasure, suggesting that the qualification rules were unfairly in Nigeria’s favor.
“Honestly, it’s strange,” he wrote. “You win your matches against the weakest team in your group, and yet Nigeria is ahead of you, even though they didn’t even beat Zimbabwe, the bottom side in their group. Apparently, beating the last-placed team is too conventional. Thank you, CAF and FIFA!”
Yago’s comments come amid lingering debates over the CAF regulations for second-placed teams, which were revised in March 2025 after Eritrea’s withdrawal left Group E with one team fewer.
Meanwhile, the Super Eagles will face Gabon in the semi-final of the African playoffs on November 13 in Morocco, while Cameroon clash with the Democratic Republic of Congo in the other tie.
The winners of both semi-finals will meet for a spot in the Intercontinental Playoffs, scheduled for March 2026 in Mexico, where one African team will fight for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
