Colonel Michael Randrianirina was sworn in as Madagascar’s president on Friday, following a military takeover that ousted President Andry Rajoelina.
The swearing-in ceremony took place at the High Constitutional Court, marking a significant shift in the island nation’s leadership.
Randrianirina, a former commander in the elite CAPSAT army unit, led the coup against Rajoelina, who fled the country amidst widespread protests.
The protests, led by Gen Z demonstrators, were sparked by frequent power outages and water shortages, but escalated into a broader movement demanding Rajoelina’s resignation.
The new president has announced plans to rule for up to two years alongside a transitional government before organizing new elections.
The African Union has suspended Madagascar’s membership, calling for the restoration of civilian-led governance and elections.
