The Federal Government has dismissed reports claiming it has abolished the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), reaffirming that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) remains the only authorized body for coordinating admissions into Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
The clarification follows widespread speculation that the government’s recent review of admission criteria had excluded the UTME.
In a statement, the Federal Ministry of Education emphasized that JAMB’s role in conducting entrance examinations and coordinating admissions remains unchanged.
The Ministry described the reports as “false and misleading,” stressing that no directive has been issued to scrap the UTME or alter the established admission process.
Key Points:
- JAMB’s Role: The board remains the statutory and legally empowered body responsible for conducting entrance examinations and coordinating admissions into all tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
- Admission Process: The established admission processes through JAMB remain fully operational, and any contrary information should be disregarded.
- Reform Aim: The recent review of admission criteria aims to expand access to tertiary institutions, including allowing candidates without a credit in Mathematics to get admissions into certain programs in the Faculty of Arts.
The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to maintaining the integrity of the admission process, upholding transparency, fairness, and merit in Nigeria’s tertiary education admission system.
