Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to driving sustainable growth through innovation, climate finance, and resilience as the state prepares to host the 2025 International Climate Change Summit.
The summit, themed “Blue Economy, Green Money: Financing Africa’s Coastal Resilience and Ocean Innovation,” is scheduled to be held in Lagos from November 6 to 7, 2025. It will bring together global leaders, investors, climate scientists, and policymakers to discuss strategies for financing Africa’s blue economy and enhancing coastal resilience.
In a statement signed by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, the Governor emphasized that Lagos continues to demonstrate leadership in subnational climate action and has developed innovative models for city-level climate finance.
According to Sanwo-Olu, Lagos is pioneering initiatives such as blue bonds and nature-based coastal protection projects, which are shaping Africa’s sustainable urban development agenda for the coming decade.

Speaking ahead of the event, Commissioner Wahab described the summit as a rallying point for African cities seeking to chart their own course in climate financing.
“The Lagos International Climate Change Summit 2025 is more than a conference; it is a declaration that African cities can finance their own future,” Wahab stated.
The summit aims to accelerate investment and action in Africa’s coastal and ocean economies ahead of the 2025 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30).
Now in its 11th edition, the event will serve as a strategic engagement platform for African and global stakeholders to align priorities, deepen partnerships, and strengthen the continent’s voice in global climate discussions.
Key areas of focus will include blue economy financing, ocean energy, sustainable fisheries, mangrove restoration, and coastal infrastructure, with emphasis on unlocking opportunities through green and blended finance instruments.
The conference will also showcase ongoing and upcoming projects that support environmental innovation, coastal resilience, and sustainable livelihoods in Lagos.
Delegates are expected from institutions such as the African Development Bank (AfDB), the World Bank, and Eko Atlantic, among other regional and international organisations.
