The Federal Government is set to introduce a bill that would require public officials to fly with Nigerian-owned airlines on international routes whenever possible. Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, disclosed this during the launch of Air Peace’s direct Abuja-London Heathrow flight.
The proposed “Fly Nigerian Act” aims to give domestic airlines a level playing field and promote national pride in the aviation sector.
Keyamo explained that the bill would mandate government officials to use Nigerian carriers if they operate on the intended route, with exceptions only when no local airline flies that destination. This move is expected to stimulate competition, potentially leading to lower ticket prices and increased accessibility for Nigerian travelers.
The bill has received backing from lawmakers and industry players, who believe it could have a positive impact on the economy.
Increased patronage of local airlines could lead to more job opportunities within the aviation value chain and keep foreign exchange circulating within the country.
