The newly appointed Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Major General Waidi Shaibu, has vowed to crush the emerging terrorist group known as Lakurawa, which has been terrorizing communities across the northern region.
Shaibu made the declaration during his screening before the Nigerian Senate in Abuja, where he emphasized the need for a whole-of-society approach to tackle the security challenge.
With his wealth of experience in counterinsurgency operations, Shaibu highlighted his role in defeating Boko Haram insurgents in 2015 and leveraging technology to improve operations.
He pledged to adopt a more strategic and people-centered approach to internal security, focusing on personnel welfare and career advancement.
“The Army will deal decisively with the new bandit group known as Lakurawa,” Shaibu said. “While security is not cheap, we will ensure effective management of available resources.”
The Senate Committee members were impressed by Shaibu’s credentials, asking him to “take a bow and go,” effectively endorsing his nomination. As part of a new set of service chiefs appointed by President Bola Tinubu, Shaibu’s task is cut out for him in tackling the security challenges facing the nation.
