President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has exercised his constitutional power of prerogative of mercy to grant relief to 28 individuals convicted of various offences.
The move follows consultations with the Council of State and wide public opinion on the subject.
After a comprehensive review of the earlier approved list, the President ordered the deletion of persons convicted of serious crimes such as kidnapping, drug-related offences, human trafficking, fraud, and unlawful possession or dealing in firearms.
Those granted pardons include notable figures such as Mrs. Anastasia Daniel Nwaobia, Barr. Hussaini Alhaji Umar, Hon. Farouk M. Lawan, and Ken Saro-Wiwa, among others. Some individuals who were initially listed for full pardon had their sentences reduced or commuted.
The list of those granted clemency includes:
- Pardons: 15 individuals, including Mrs. Anastasia Daniel Nwaobia, Barr. Hussaini Alhaji Umar, and Hon. Farouk M. Lawan
- Commutations: 13 individuals, including those whose death sentences were commuted to life imprisonment
The President’s decision has been made public, and the individuals concerned can now benefit from the clemency granted to them.
