The Senate has directed the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to strictly enforce the ban on packaging high-strength alcoholic beverages in sachet formats starting December 2025.
This resolution follows a motion sponsored by Senator Asuquo Ekpeyong, emphasizing the need to halt further extensions of the phase-out period.
The ban aims to curb underage drinking, reduce health risks, and address social issues associated with cheap, easily accessible alcohol.
NAFDAC had previously announced a phased ban in 2018, with a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by stakeholders, and an additional one-year moratorium granted in 2024.
The Senate has instructed the Federal Ministry of Health to support NAFDAC’s enforcement efforts and release the National Alcohol Policy, prohibiting sachet packaging of high-strength alcoholic beverages.
