The Democratic Republic of Congo has suspended activities at a Chinese-operated mining site in the south of the country after a spill, Mines Minister Louis Watum Kabamba announced.
The mine, operated by Congo Dongfang International Mining (CDM), a unit of China’s Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt, was found to be non-compliant with environmental standards, causing water pollution and posing health risks to local populations.
Kabamba stated that CDM must repair the environmental damage, ensure staff remuneration, compensate affected populations, and comply with the Mining Code.
The suspension will last for three months, with possible extensions. An investigation into the incident is underway.
