Prosecutors in Tanzania have charged 98 people with treason for alleged involvement in violent protests during last week’s general election.
The charges, filed in the resident magistrate court of Dar es Salaam, accuse the individuals of forming an intention to obstruct the 2025 general election and causing damage to government properties.
The protests were largely driven by anger over the exclusion of two leading opposition candidates, including CHADEMA leader Tundu Lissu, who was charged with treason in April.
The main opposition party and human rights activists claim that security forces killed over 1,000 people, while the government disputes these numbers.
Religious leaders have urged the government to reconcile with political opponents and protesters, warning that the charges may escalate tensions.
The African Union observers had earlier stated that the vote was not credible, citing ballot box stuffing.
