Kenyan activists Bob Njagi and Nicholas Oyoo, who disappeared in Uganda five weeks ago, have been found alive and are being transported to Nairobi.
The pair, who were supporting Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine’s campaign, were reportedly seen being forced into a car by masked men.
Vocal Africa and other human rights groups had been campaigning for their release, with Ugandan police initially denying they were in custody.
The activists’ disappearance sparked concerns of abduction and mistreatment, echoing past incidents involving politicians and activists in East Africa
The news has been welcomed by Kenyan and Ugandan governments, activists, journalists, and citizens who campaigned for their release.
Bobi Wine, who is running for president in next year’s elections, had accused the Ugandan government of targeting the Kenyans for associating with him.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns about human rights abuses and government crackdowns on opposition in the region.
