A tragic incident occurred off the coast of Libya, where a rubber boat carrying 49 migrants capsized, leaving at least 42 people missing and presumed dead.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that Libyan authorities rescued seven survivors who had drifted at sea for six days after the vessel sank near the Al Buri oilfield.

The missing migrants include:

  • 29 from Sudan
  • 8 from Somalia
  • 3 from Cameroon
  • 2 from Nigeria

The rescued survivors comprise four people from Sudan, two Nigerians, and one person from Cameroon.

This devastating incident highlights the risks migrants take attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea in search of a better life.

Libya has become a major transit route for migrants seeking to reach Europe, and such tragedies have become increasingly common.

The IOM has urged the international community to scale up search and rescue operations and guarantee safe disembarkation for survivors.
