The Federal Government has inaugurated an Inter-Ministerial Committee on the Ban of Single-Use Plastics (SUPs), in a major push toward promoting environmental sustainability and reforming waste management across the country.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume—represented by the Permanent Secretary overseeing the General Services Office (GSO), Mohammed Sanusi Danjuma—said the initiative aligns with Nigeria’s commitment to global environmental standards and the fight against plastic pollution, which poses serious risks to public health, ecosystems, and marine life.

The committee, which includes representatives from key Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) as well as relevant stakeholder organizations, has been tasked with coordinating and supervising the development and implementation of strategies to phase out single-use plastics nationwide.
According to the government, the committee’s Terms of Reference include investigating the use and impact of SUPs, evaluating the potential benefits and implications of the ban, and promoting best practices for environmental sustainability within the plastic value chain.
The move, officials said, reflects Nigeria’s growing leadership in environmental stewardship and its commitment to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
