Youths in Eruku, a community in Kwara State’s Ekiti Local Government Area, have staged a major protest after a late-night attack by armed bandits, blocking the Ilorin-Kabba highway and causing heavy traffic disruption.
The attack, which lasted close to an hour, reportedly killed two people and left several others missing.
The protesters are accusing security operatives of abandoning them during the attack, despite the community’s support in building facilities for the local police division.
A youth leader, Peter Adesiyan, criticized the police for their slow response, saying they failed to act when residents needed them most.
The Kwara State Government has called for more security operatives to be deployed to the area, while President Bola Tinubu has postponed his travels to South Africa and Angola over the killings and abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State.
