An Air Tanzania flight from Dar es Salaam to Lagos was delayed on Friday after a technical fault was discovered on the aircraft.
Passengers had already boarded the plane when the issue was identified, prompting the airline to deboard them for safety reasons.
Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), stated that the airline attempted to fix the problem but was unsuccessful.
The NCAA has urged Air Tanzania to provide hotel accommodation, meals, and timely updates to the stranded passengers, citing Part 19 of the NCAA Regulations 2023.
One passenger has a visa interview scheduled for Monday, and the airline has been advised to offer refunds or rebook them on alternative flights if necessary.
As of Saturday morning, passengers had been provided with hotel accommodation and a meal, and the airline assured them they would be flown today, despite not typically operating flights to Nigeria on weekends.
The NCAA will continue monitoring the situation to ensure the passengers’ safe arrival.
