Hundreds of anxious parents descended on the Federal Government Girls’ College (FGGC) Bwari, located on the outskirts of Abuja, on Saturday to evacuate their children following a federal government directive to immediately shut down 47 Federal Unity Colleges across the country due to escalating security concerns.
The scene outside the school gate was chaotic, with parents carrying luggage, assisting their children, and making arrangements to return home.
Many students, some still in uniform, packed belongings into vehicles while others helped classmates gather their items.
The federal government had ordered the shutdown on Friday, citing credible security threats targeting Federal Unity Colleges.
The affected schools include FGGC Minjibir, FTC Ganduje, FGGC Zaria, and FGGC Bwari, among others. Security operatives were visibly present around the school premises to ensure a smooth and safe evacuation process.
The closure has raised concerns about the impact on the academic calendar, with thousands of students affected nationwide.
