Social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has begun testing a new feature that reveals the country where an account is based, in a move aimed at boosting transparency and combating misinformation.
Although the feature is not yet visible to all users, those included in the test can check an account’s location by clicking on the profile bio, selecting the account’s join date, and viewing its country of origin.
X’s Head of Product, Nikita Bier, announced the update in an October 14 post, saying the goal is to help users verify the authenticity of content they encounter.
“When you read content on X, you should be able to verify its authenticity. This is critical to getting a pulse on important issues happening in the world,” Bier said. “We’re experimenting with displaying new information on profiles, including which country an account is based in… to get feedback.”

The feature expands profile details to include account creation location, verification status, number of username changes, and the country of the app store used during account setup.
Supporters of the update say the change will make it easier to identify accounts used for foreign interference, misinformation campaigns, engagement farming, or impersonation.
But critics warn that publicly displaying a user’s country raises privacy concerns. In response, X has added an option allowing users to show only a broader region or continent instead of a specific country.
The update is part of X’s ongoing efforts to improve content verification and give users more context about the sources behind posts on the platform.
