Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has announced a unilateral three-month humanitarian ceasefire, following international pressure, particularly from US President Donald Trump, to end the war that has plunged the country into famine.
The announcement came a day after Sudan’s army chief, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, rejected a peace proposal from the Quad group, comprising the US, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt.
RSF leader General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo stated that the ceasefire is in response to international efforts, and he hopes the Quad countries will push the other side to engage with this step. However, the army chief has accused the US proposal of aiming to weaken the Sudanese army while allowing the RSF to maintain seized territory.
The war in Sudan, which began in April 2023, has killed tens of thousands of civilians, with the RSF accused of genocide and both Dagalo and Burhan sanctioned by the US. The conflict has also led to widespread famine and ethnic attacks.
