Guinea-Bissau’s deposed President Umaro Sissoco Embaló has arrived in neighbouring Senegal following his release by military forces that toppled his government.

Embaló landed in Senegal on a chartered military flight, according to the Senegalese foreign ministry. The regional West African bloc Ecowas had negotiated his transfer amid rising tensions in Guinea-Bissau.

The military has sworn in Gen Horta N’Tam as the new transitional leader, who will rule for a year.

The coup occurred a day before the provisional election results were due, with the military suspending the electoral process and blocking the release of results, citing a plot to destabilise the country.

Ecowas and the African Union have condemned the coup, demanding the restoration of constitutional order.
