Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from his position, effective immediately, citing health reasons.
In a letter to President Bola Tinubu, Abubakar, 63, stated that his poor health made it impossible for him to continue serving.
President Tinubu has accepted his resignation and expressed gratitude for Abubakar’s service to the nation.
Abubakar, a former two-term governor of Jigawa State, was appointed Defence Minister on August 21, 2023.
His resignation comes as President Tinubu declared a national security emergency and plans to elaborate on its scope soon.
The President is expected to inform the Senate of Abubakar’s successor later this week.
