Ugandan police are investigating reports that officers beat opposition leader Bobi Wine and his supporters at a campaign rally in Gulu, ahead of the January 15 presidential election.
Wine, who is challenging President Yoweri Museveni, claims security forces hit him in the face with a cane and injured several supporters, who were hospitalized.
The incident has sparked concerns about escalating violence and human rights abuses in Uganda.
The Electoral Commission has condemned the violence and urged police to investigate and hold perpetrators accountable.
Wine’s party, the National Unity Platform, alleges Museveni’s government regularly detains, kidnaps, and tortures its members, while the government denies these allegations, citing legitimate security concerns.
