President Bola Tinubu has formally written to the Senate, requesting confirmation to present the 2026 annual budget to a joint session of the National Assembly.
According to the letter read by the Senate President during plenary, Tinubu proposed delivering the budget on Friday at 2 p.m. Some lawmakers raised concerns that the timing coincides with Muslim prayers and urged a reconsideration of the schedule. The Senate President confirmed he would consult with the President on the matter.

This follows the precedent set in December 2024, when Tinubu presented the ₦49.7 trillion 2025 budget proposal. Highlights of that budget included allocations of ₦4.91 trillion for defence and security, ₦4.06 trillion for infrastructure, ₦3.5 trillion for education, and ₦2.4 trillion for health, representing a ₦20 trillion increase over the 2024 budget.
Tinubu also outlined plans to peg crude oil production at 2.06 million barrels per day in 2025, reduce the importation of finished petroleum products, and increase exports of refined products.
Emphasising economic reforms and progress, Tinubu said, “The reforms are yielding results, no reversals. Our nation faces challenges from corruption and insecurity, but these are surmountable when we work collaboratively. The time for lamentation is over. The time to act is now.”
