The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan, is meeting with leaders of the Tanimu Turaki-led and Samuel Anyanwu-led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) factions in Abuja.
The meeting aims to address the commission’s receipt of conflicting correspondence from the two groups claiming PDP leadership, ahead of upcoming elections in FCT, Osun, and Ekiti states.
Amupitan’s meeting with the PDP factions comes after his appointment as INEC Chairman in October 2025, following unanimous approval by the National Council of State and Senate confirmation.
He has emphasized the need for credible, inclusive, and transparent elections, and has vowed to engage stakeholders to ensure free, fair, and credible polls.
The PDP leadership crisis has sparked concerns about the party’s ability to participate effectively in upcoming elections. Amupitan’s meeting with the rival factions is seen as an effort to resolve the issue and ensure a smooth electoral process.
