Mali and Zambia will kick off their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaigns on Monday, December 22, at Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca. Both teams, boasting rich continental histories, are aiming to secure crucial opening points that could set the tone for their respective tournaments.

Mali, featuring a talented and star-studded squad, are seeking to improve on past performances, having finished runners-up in 1972 and reached several semi-finals in previous editions. Under coach Tom Saintfiet, the team emphasizes tactical discipline, midfield control, and a blend of experience and ambition. Mali will aim to dictate play, control tempo, and convert key opportunities into goals.

Zambia, meanwhile, will rely on speed, physical intensity, and direct attacking transitions. Coach Musa Sichone’s side, with its respected continental experience, hopes to exploit spaces and take advantage of any lapses by Mali. With less external pressure, Zambia could leverage a psychological edge in this high-stakes

opener.

Mali coach Tom Saintfiet said ahead of the game: “Our first task is against Zambia, one of Africa’s best teams. Our priority is to earn three points. We must respect all opponents and stay focused throughout the match. Since my arrival, we have achieved our best statistical performance with Mali.”

Midfielder Aliou Dieng added: “God willing, we will have a good start. The match won’t be easy, but we will show our quality on the pitch rather than talk.”

Zambia coach Musa Sichone expressed optimism: “We are aiming for a strong start. The players are well-prepared, fit, and ready. For me, participating in this tournament is about achieving results, not just playing.”

Captain Fashion Sakala added: “We have prepared well, tactically and mentally. I am excited and experienced, and our goal is to go far in this tournament.”

This AFCON meeting will mark only the second time Mali and Zambia face each other in the tournament’s history. Their previous encounter came in the 1994 semifinals, where Zambia defeated Mali 4-0.

With both sides eager for a strong start, Monday’s clash promises an intense, tactical, and highly competitive contest in Group A.
