Egypt secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Zimbabwe in Group B of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025, thanks to a stoppage-time strike from Mohamed Salah on Monday.
Zimbabwe took an early lead in the 20th minute through Prince Dube after a fine assist from Jordan Jalai. Egypt dominated possession throughout but struggled to break through until Omar Marmoush equalised in the 63rd minute. Salah then delivered the decisive goal in stoppage time, sparking celebrations among players and fans.
Egypt coach Hossam Hassan praised his squad’s resilience, saying, “We created several opportunities but were frustrated in the first half. The team showed character to come back and win.” Zimbabwe coach Mario Marinica acknowledged the quality of Egypt’s players but vowed to fight for points in the remaining group matches.

In another Group B encounter, South Africa edged Angola 2-1 at the Grand Stade de Marrakech. Oswin Appollis opened the scoring for Bafana Bafana in the 17th minute, but Angola equalised in the 34th through Show’s flick from a Fredy free-kick. Lyle Foster restored South Africa’s lead in the 79th minute with a stunning finish, securing the win for Hugo Broos’ side.
Meanwhile, Group A action saw Mali and Zambia play out a thrilling 1-1 draw at Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca. Lassine Sinayoko put Mali ahead in the 61st minute, only for Zambia’s Patson Daka to snatch a late equaliser with a stoppage-time header. Mali coach Tom Saintfiet lamented the last-minute goal, calling it “very painful,” while Zambia coach Moses Sichone praised his team’s perseverance.
The results highlight the competitive start to AFCON 2025, with drama, late goals, and tight contests across the opening fixtures.
