A routine house cleaning in a Nasarawa State residential compound turned tragic on Wednesday when a forgotten hand grenade exploded, severely injuring a female soldier and two young children.
The incident occurred in a compound along Abacha Road in Maraba when a woman, while cleaning her apartment, discovered the explosive device.
According to preliminary reports, the grenade had been left behind approximately three years ago by a previous tenant, an unidentified soldier who had served in the North-East.
Unaware of the danger, the woman brought the device to her neighbor, a female soldier identified as Mohammed, to ask if it was of any use.
The grenade detonated immediately upon being examined, causing a severe injury to the soldier’s left wrist and injuring the two children of the woman who found it.
The wounded soldier was rushed through a series of medical facilities before being transferred to Cedarcrest Hospital in Apo, where her condition is now reported to be stable.
