The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced it will begin a “total, indefinite, and complete” nationwide strike on January 12, accusing the federal government of failing to implement a signed agreement on doctors’ welfare.
Tagged “No Implementation, No Going Back,” the strike will commence after diplomatic efforts failed to produce results, leaving industrial action as the last resort.
The group’s nine major demands include the immediate payment of promotion and salary arrears, the full implementation of professional allowances, the reinstatement of five doctors suspended in Lokoja, and a resolution to salary delays for house officers.
This action follows the suspension of a previous 29-day strike on November 29, 2025, after both sides signed a Memorandum of Understanding; however, the doctors say the government has shown no “visible progress” since the agreed-upon deadline passed.
In addition to the strike, the association plans to hold centre-based protests from January 12 to 16, escalating to regional and national demonstrations if their demands remain unaddressed.
