The Yobe State Government has donated N20 million to victims of a recent boat accident in Garbi town, Nguru Local Government Area.
The announcement was made on Wednesday by Hussaini Mai-Sule, Press Secretary to Deputy Governor Alhaji Idi Gubana, in Damaturu.
At least 29 people, including farmers and fishermen, have been confirmed dead, while 14 others remain missing following the accident on January 4. The boat, carrying about 52 passengers, was travelling from Adiyani town in Guri LGA, Jigawa State, to Garbi town in Nguru LGA when it capsized.
Deputy Governor Gubana, who visited the Nguru Emirate Council and the victims on Tuesday, directed that the funds be shared among the injured passengers and the families of those who lost their lives. He prayed for the families to find strength and for the deceased to rest in peace.

Gubana also instructed the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to train and sensitise canoe operators on safety measures. He promised that the state government would provide modern boats and life jackets to improve water transportation and cautioned operators against overloading, which he said is the main cause of accidents in the area.
The Executive Secretary of YOSEMA, Dr Mohammed Goje, confirmed that the accident occurred on January 3. He said 29 people were killed, 15 were rescued, and 8 remain missing. Search and rescue operations are ongoing under the supervision of local divers and the agency.
