The Toronto Police Service has confirmed the death of a 46-year-old Nigerian man following a shooting at a bus terminal in Toronto, Canada.

Police said officers responded to reports of a shooting at about 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 4, 2026, at the Yorkdale GO Bus Terminal, located near Yorkdale Road and Allen Road.

In an update issued on Wednesday, the Toronto Police Service said the incident occurred shortly after both the victim and the suspect boarded a GO bus at the terminal.

“It is alleged that the victim and the suspect boarded a GO bus at the terminal, where the suspect shot the victim before fleeing the scene on foot,” the police said in a statement.

Officers who arrived at the scene found the male victim suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite life-saving efforts by emergency responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police confirmed that the suspect was located and arrested a short time after the shooting, and a firearm was recovered.

The victim was later identified as Osemwengie Irorere, a 46-year-old Nigerian national.

Investigators also confirmed that Tyrel Gibson, 40, of Toronto, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the incident.

“The victim has been identified as Osemwengie Irorere, 46, of Nigeria. Investigators had previously announced the arrest of Tyrel Gibson, 40, of Toronto. He has been charged with first-degree murder,” the statement said.

According to police, Gibson was scheduled to appear before the Toronto Regional Bail Centre at 2201 Finch Avenue West on Monday, January 5, 2026, at 9:30 a.m.
