The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has confirmed that it has filed formal complaints with both the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) over refereeing decisions during its 2025 Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinal match against Nigeria.
The development was announced on Monday via the official X account of the Algerian national team, Équipe d’Algérie de football. According to the federation, the complaints were submitted alongside a request for a thorough investigation into what it described as controversial officiating during the encounter.
In a statement, the FAF said it could not ignore the refereeing calls in the match, noting that the decisions raised serious concerns and sparked widespread dissatisfaction.

“The Algerian Football Federation cannot overlook the refereeing decisions in the last match, which raised questions and caused widespread dissatisfaction, as they undermine the credibility of African refereeing and do not serve the image of African football internationally,” the statement read.
“Accordingly, the Algerian Football Federation has formally contacted CAF and FIFA by submitting an official complaint, accompanied by a request to open an investigation, to clarify what occurred and take appropriate action in accordance with applicable regulations.”
Algeria were eliminated from the tournament following a 2-0 defeat to Nigeria on Saturday. Goals from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams sealed the Super Eagles’ place in the semifinals and brought an end to the Desert Foxes’ AFCON campaign.

The match was marred by post-game unrest, with Algerian players confronting match officials on the pitch. Videos circulating on social media later showed scuffles involving some players and referees, as well as an attempted pitch invasion by fans, which was stopped by stadium security.
CAF confirmed on Monday that it has opened an investigation into the incidents, stating that match reports and video evidence point to possible misconduct by players and officials. The cases have since been referred to CAF’s Disciplinary Board for further review.
Meanwhile, the FAF urged supporters to continue backing the national team, describing the squad as being in a rebuilding phase. The federation stressed the need to draw lessons from the tournament as preparations continue for future competitions, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Algerian federation also expressed confidence in the players, technical crew, and football administrators, commending their commitment and efforts throughout the tournament.
