Renowned author Chimamanda Adichie has taken legal action against Euracare Hospital in Lagos, alleging that “criminal negligence” by its staff led to the death of her 21-month-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi, on January 7, 2026.
Through her lawyers, Adichie served the hospital a legal notice demanding all medical records after her son died following diagnostic procedures, including an MRI, that were performed ahead of a planned medical evacuation to the United States.
The family alleges multiple failures in care, including an improper dose of the sedative propofol, inadequate monitoring, and unsafe patient transfer protocols.
While Euracare has expressed sympathy and launched an internal investigation, it has also disputed the family’s account, stating the child was “critically ill” upon arrival and that their care followed established protocols.
In response, the child’s aunt, Dr. Anthea Esege Nwandu, has publicly refuted the hospital’s claims, while Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has ordered an official probe into the matter.
