The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) are set to formalize a new agreement this Wednesday, January 14, in a move expected to bring stability to Nigeria’s public university system after years of recurring strikes.
The signing ceremony, which will be held at the TETFund Conference Hall in Abuja, follows extensive negotiations and averts a recently threatened strike action by the union.
This new deal, which replaces a contentious 2009 agreement, includes a 40% salary increase for academic staff, improved pension benefits for professors, and increased funding for research and university infrastructure.
The government says the agreement aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda” and reflects a commitment to resolving disputes through dialogue to create a more stable academic environment for students and staff.
