Former Cameroon captain Samuel Eto’o has been handed a four-match suspension and fined $20,000 by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) after being found guilty of misconduct.

In a statement, CAF said Eto’o violated its principles of sportsmanship during the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final clash between Cameroon and hosts Morocco. Eto’o, who is now president of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT), was present at the match, which ended in a 2–0 defeat for the Indomitable Lions.

The former Barcelona and Inter Milan striker was reportedly seen making angry gestures in reaction to several officiating decisions during the game. CAF president Patrice Motsepe, who was also in attendance at the stadium in Rabat, is understood to have witnessed the incident.

Earlier in the week, CAF announced the launch of an investigation into “violent confrontations and unacceptable behaviour of some players and officials” during the quarter-final matches.

FECAFOOT has since rejected CAF’s ruling, questioning the disciplinary process and stating that it raises “serious reservations about the fundamental requirements of a fair trial.” In a follow-up statement issued on Wednesday, the federation expressed its support for Eto’o and indicated that he is likely to appeal the sanction.

Eto’o, one of Africa’s most decorated footballers, has faced several controversies since taking over as FECAFOOT president in 2021. His tenure has been marked by allegations of misconduct and administrative irregularities, accusations he has repeatedly denied while pointing to reforms and achievements under his leadership.
