Three suspected vandals have been arrested for stealing road studs on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos state. The arrest follows the recent inauguration of a surveillance centre and closed-circuit television (CCTV) for the bridge.

The suspects were apprehended on Friday while committing the offence, after the CCTV control centre detected their actions in real time and alerted police officers.

Dave Umahi, minister of works, expressed concern over the rising vandalism of critical road and bridge infrastructure across the country, citing cases of destroyed parapets and harvested reinforcements.

Olufemi Dare, federal controller of works in Lagos, said 156 road studs had been stolen along the yellow line on the bridge before the suspects were caught.

The CCTV control centre, inaugurated about a week ago, is already proving effective in monitoring and protecting federal road infrastructure. The suspects were arrested on the spot, and police officers said the cameras greatly aided the operation.
