Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine says his wife, Barbara Kyagulanyi, has been hospitalized after soldiers invaded their residence, partially undressed and choked her. Wine, who is in hiding, alleges the raid was an attempt to locate him, following his announcement as the runner-up in the January 15 presidential election.
The military has been accused of using force and intimidation tactics against opposition figures, with Wine’s party, National Unity Platform (NUP), claiming 30 supporters were killed and 2,000 detained.
The military chief, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has demanded Wine’s surrender, labeling him a rebel.
The incident has sparked international concern, with the UN Secretary-General expressing alarm over the violence and arrests of opposition figures.
Critics accuse President Yoweri Museveni’s government of using the military to maintain power.
