Heavy security was deployed on Monday at the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) Secretariat in Area 11, Garki, as hundreds of striking workers marched to press their demands over unresolved labour disputes.

The demonstration came following the adjournment of a case between the FCTA and the leadership of the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC) by the National Industrial Court to Tuesday, January 27. Workers had gathered at the court from early morning, days after FCT Minister Nyesom Wike filed a suit against the union over the blockade of the secretariat’s gate during previous protests.

Security operatives from the military, police, Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps were stationed around both the FCTA Secretariat and the National Industrial Court to maintain order.

Minister Wike arrived at the secretariat in the early hours to carry out official duties but cut short his schedule when protesters returned following the court’s adjournment. The striking workers insisted their demands must be met and vowed to continue the protest until a resolution is reached.

Pedestrian gates at the FCTA and Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) secretariats were reopened, allowing staff access to their offices. Authorities argued that the union lacks the legal authority to block premises or prevent officials from performing their duties.

The situation remained tense Monday afternoon, with security personnel maintaining a strong presence around the area.
