Twenty-nine years after his death, legendary Nigerian musician and Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Aníkulápó Kuti, was honoured at the Grammy Honours Party, as his enduring legacy and global influence took centre stage at the prestigious music event.

The celebration, held on the sidelines of the Grammy Awards, was dedicated to recognising Fela’s lasting impact on music, culture and social consciousness, underscoring his role in shaping Afrobeat into a globally celebrated genre.

The event attracted prominent figures from Nigeria’s creative industry, including Afrobeats superstar Davido, his sister Sharon Adeleke, music executive Bose Ogulu, and Fela’s daughter, Yeni Kuti. Their presence highlighted the strong intergenerational connection within Nigerian music and reaffirmed Fela Kuti’s towering influence on contemporary global sounds.

Organisers described the honour as a tribute not only to Fela’s revolutionary artistry but also to his fearless activism and cultural legacy, which continue to inspire musicians and audiences around the world decades after his passing.

The recognition at the Grammys further cements Fela Aníkulápó Kuti’s status as one of Africa’s most influential musical icons, whose work laid the foundation for the global rise of Afrobeat and Afrobeats.
