The Senate has confirmed Hon. Justice Joseph Olubunmi Kayode Oyewole, JCA, as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, following the consideration of a report by the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights & Legal Matters.

The confirmation was announced on Tuesday after the committee, chaired by Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire (APC, Ondo Central), presented its findings to the Senate. Senator Adegbonmire stated, “That the Senate do receive and consider the report of the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights & Legal Matters on the confirmation of the nomination of Hon. The nomination followed a letter from President Bola Tinubu to the Senate last week, formally requesting the confirmation of Justice Oyewole. The letter, read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, cited Section 231(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and requested that the Senate consider the appointment expeditiously.

The President’s letter read in part: “I am pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate the appointment of Hon. Justice Oyewole Kayode as Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. While it is my hope that the Senate will consider and confirm the nomination expeditiously, please accept the assurances of my highest regards.”

Following the reading, the communication was referred to the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights & Legal Matters for legislative action and report back, culminating in Justice Oyewole’s confirmation.
