Sudan’s army chief, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, announced on Tuesday that government forces had broken a paramilitary siege on Kadugli, the capital of South Kordofan state.

In a brief interview aired on state television, al-Burhan said, “I congratulate the Sudanese people on the opening of the road to Kadugli, and congratulations to our people in Kadugli on the arrival of the army.”

The development comes amid ongoing instability in Sudan, where clashes between the army and paramilitary forces have disrupted security in several regions.
