The Nigerian Senate has failed to conclude deliberations on the proposed Electoral Act amendment bill, marking the third unsuccessful attempt in two weeks.
Lawmakers held a closed-door executive session for five hours but didn’t disclose details of their discussions.
The bill aims to improve electoral credibility and institutional independence, but the senate is taking a cautious approach, citing the volume of post-election litigation after the 2023 polls.
The house of representatives has already passed the bill, but the senate wants to ensure careful scrutiny.
The ad hoc committee reviewing the bill is chaired by Niyi Adegbonmire and has been given three days to complete its assignment. The senate leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, said the bill would significantly improve electoral credibility.
