Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis is considering running for the leadership of the Democratic Alliance (DA), South Africa’s second-biggest party in the coalition government.
This comes after current DA leader John Steenhuisen announced he won’t seek re-election at the party’s April leadership contest.
Hill-Lewis, who has been mayor since 2021, is seen as a frontrunner for the post, with many party members urging him to run.
Hill-Lewis will confirm his decision later this month, following internal party rules. Regardless of the outcome, he plans to seek a second term as Cape Town mayor in local government elections later this year.
As mayor, Hill-Lewis has prioritized infrastructure investment, energy resilience, and financial stability, framing Cape Town as a buffer against state dysfunction.
