Tension is running high in Ogidi community, Anambra State, after gunmen killed the President General of the town’s union and another resident in a late-evening attack on Friday.
The victims were shot dead at the Ogidi School Field, a popular public space in the community, in an incident linked to a possible reprisal attack connected to the recent capture and killing of a notorious cultist in the area.
Residents are living in fear, with many staying indoors amid concerns over further violence.
The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the incident and is working with eyewitness accounts and other intelligence to identify and arrest the perpetrators. “The Command is working with eyewitness accounts and other available intelligence to identify and arrest the perpetrators,” said Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga.
The killing has sparked outrage in the community, with residents and local officials condemning the attack and mourning the loss of the duly elected community leader.
The police have assured the public that security agencies are intensifying efforts to prevent further breakdown of law and order in the area.
