A South African man, Wiandre Pretorius, 41, has been found dead at a petrol station in Brakpan, east of Johannesburg, reportedly after shooting himself.
Pretorius was a person of interest in the 2022 murder of witness Emmanuel Mbense and had recently survived an assassination attempt.
His death leaves only eight of the original 12 persons of interest in Mbense’s killing still alive, with police investigating possible links to a syndicate eliminating witnesses.
Pretorius’s name was mentioned at the Madlanga Commission, a corruption inquiry set up by President Cyril Ramaphosa, in connection with Mbense’s murder.
Another witness, Marius van der Merwe, was shot dead three weeks after testifying against Pretorius.
Police spokesperson Brig Athlenda Mathe stated that arrests are imminent in Mbense’s murder case.
